Whether you are just starting out with your southwest decor or have been a fan for years and want to spice up a room, a lamp shade is a good place to start. You can even upgrade an old lamp or buy a used one and work it over by putting a new lamp shade on it.
Rawhide lamp shades say Southwest like nothing else. The rawhide used on lampshades is not tanned, allowing the hide to keep its own unique character. Most have a laced edge using natural leather for superior quality.
These lampshades are available in several natural colors and are dyed so also available in vivid colors; each one creating its own warm glow. Lampshades of rawhide can be purchased for table lamps, desk lamps, chandeliers and even floor lamps.
Lamp bases are as diverse as the lampshades. For a truly southwest look try one built out of real deer antlers. It makes for quite a dramatic look. Others bases include aspen logs, pottery, Indian drums and wrought iron. Place any one of these on a Zapata floor rug or tablecloth for an impressive statement.
Keep in mind that heat can crack rawhide, therefore, it is a good idea to condition your lampshade regularly. It is also important that you keep your rawhide out of direct sunlight and to use the recommended wattage in light bulbs. A light bulb that gets too hot can crack your rawhide.
Condition your rawhide weekly or monthly depending on the amount of humidity where you live. A good conditioner to use is neatsfoot oil. With the proper care your rawhide lampshade will maintain its gorgeous southwest look and texture.
Chandeliers with rawhide shades make a dramatic statement to any room. These small chandelier shades also have stitched leather edges. They come in many colors, patterns, quite a few shapes and several sizes. Brown chandelier shades look rugged and will add a cozy glow to your room. Red chandelier shades look southwestern and eclectic at the same time.
Teepee shaped rawhide shades are also available and would look great in any room of the house, even a childs room. What child would not want a teepee light fixture in his/her room? Kokopelli chandelier shades are also available. These add a sense of spirit and fun to any southwest decor. Ponderosa Pines are another option on chandelier shades and will add a log cabin feel to your room.
There are so many different styles of lamp shades available that choosing just the right one will be a challenge. For more help with this and to see what is available and where to shop visit.
